Wiki Syntax

When editing a Netcipia page, you can use 2 text editors:
  • the wiki editor
  • the wysiwyg editor
Editor-01.jpg

The wysiwyg editor is the easiest way for a beginner to start editing. It offers most of the typical text editor features: Editor-02.jpg

The wiki editor is not a wysiwyg editor (not what-you-see-is-what-you-get). It is a text editor, in which you must use a specific syntax and will not see the end-result as you type. For example, to make a text bold in the wysiwyg editor, simply select the text and click on the bold button. In the wiki editor, you will need to write your text and add a special character before and after your text:

*this text will be displayed in bold*

The full syntax of the wiki editor is available on the Netcipia web site or on the right side of your screen during editing.

What are the advantages of the wiki editor:

  • once you know the syntax, it is much quicker
  • you can insert HTML code to embed external content in your page, such as YouTube videos
  • you can use special wiki codes to render special characters
  • you can use programming languages in the pages
Of course the two last points are mostly for advanced users. But because at this point, our wysiwyg editor doesn't handle the insertion of HTML code, it is better to familiarize yourself with the wiki syntax. You will gain valuable speed and flexibility.

One you have started to use one type of editor in a page, we strongly advise that you finish that page with the same editor, to avoid any formatting quirks.

Spell Checker

Netcipia's editors do not come with spell check. But for those who use Firefox browsers you do get this feature automatically when in edit mode.

I have been using a combination of WIKI editor and preview feature. I find on several occasions that when I returned to edit a page after preview, the title had disappeared. I reentered it each time - perhaps it was saved automatically … ?
