Known issues

Here is the list of known issues of the current platform, and how to work around with them

CodeIssueWork aroundNetcipia Status
1Empty cells in tables within WYSIWYG mode create issuesAllways fill cells or work within the wiki editorFixed with XWiki 1.1 integration!
2Creating tables within WYSIWYG mode generates some extra-code not necessaryIf the table is displayed correctly in view mode, no problem, otherwise go to the wiki editor and reformat correctly the tableFixed with XWiki 1.1 integration!
3Member Invite Password Email Server InoperativeHave Netcipia manually set passwords for each member of your Place, until it is fixedFixed through the "forgot password" feature
4In the history page, the editor of a comment is not the author of the comment, but the author of the last modification of the page fixed

Functionality

Here are some issues which, while not broken code, impact the functionality of the platform and merit a quick fix by the programmers.

1. Spaces cannot be fully deleted or renamed.
If an error is made by the user in naming a space, deletion of the space merely removes its content; the then blank space remains on the sidebar menu perpetually, and there is no way to delete it completely. (why does #1 on any list always indent itself?)

(comment from Netcipia) It is possible to delete all the documents and the space itself. Use the space index to do it, deleting first all the pages except the WebHome, and finishing by deleting the WebHome itself. The space name will then disappear from the space panel.

2. Editorial control over individual Spaces cannot be assigned to specific members.
Most organizations that would establish a Place will have subunits, whether individual members or local chapters, departments, committees, etc., which can be given individual Spaces within it; so far, so good. However, the only way to enable them to edit their own Space, is to either make that Space editable by all members in the universe for that Place, OR to give its cognizant member administrative rights to edit throughout the entire Place.

(comment from Netcipia) We'll work on this topic to improve individual right managements. We can't give you a release date, but it should be before end of 2007.

3. Email list maintained of members has no direct utility.
Communication between Place owners and their members can only occur on the site itself, despite the fact that the system already holds an email record of every member. Some type of Listserv for newsletters and other mailing list applications would be a very useful communications tool for Netcipia communities. One compatible example - Freelists - could be integrated nicely with the system, and other listserve freeware is out there in the public domain.

(comment from Netcipia) You have now the "Notify" link that uses the email adress of the members to allow any other member to communicate with them. More information here. Other features like this will arrive.

About space deleting, you can fully delete a space. Just delete each page of the space ( see the index of the space to check that) ending with the WebHome of your space (now you shouldn't be able to delete this page until all the other pages of the space are deleted). There shouldn't be any link left in the space menu then. If you still have a link concerning a supposed blank space into it (i guess there is a "?" link next to it), click on it to edit and re-create the WebHome page of this space, then go to the index of this space and delete any page left, as said above. But i agree that simply rename the space would be great :)

No, Nicolas, on the index of the space there is NO means of deleting any pages within the space. I know it says that in the documentation, but it does not exist. There is no way to totally delete a space. Nothing will remove the link to the space either. The WebHome of the space is not deletable by any mechanism in the system, either. At the moment, there is absolutely Nothing, anywhere in the system (accessable to Placeowners), that can be clicked on or edited to delete a space. It would be nice.

@David: when you are in the index of the space, click on a page other than WebHome, and you will be able to delete this page with the DELETE action available in the toolbox panel. After this deletion, display again the index, and choose another page, and do the same (not very efficient :-( but we'll improve this later). Once all the pages except WebHome are deleted, click on the WebHome page, and the DELETE action will appear automatically in the Toolbox to delete also this WebHome page. And after deletion, the space link will disappear from the space panel :-)

Sorry i've not been enough explicit about how to delete a page. I was just talking about the index in order to see what pages needed to be deleted. You of course need to be on the page you want to delete to see the delete link in the toolbox panel. I'm gonna add these informations in the tutorial right now :)

I used the "columns layout" function to move one of the side panels. After I had saved it, I noticed that the "backlinks" panel had disappeared. Grrr. Yes, I know the page warned me that any missing panels would be lost, but I assumed it meant that if I deleted a panel, I couldn't get it back. I didn't take any action to delete anything. (Fortunately, I was able to add backlink functionality to the "MyInformationArea" panel.)

Adding a blog entry with a question mark at the end of the entry name messes up the entry. It can't be directly viewed, edited or deleted. The problem is with the generation of the view links - it leaves off the "%3F" (hex for question mark).

WORKAROUND: don't use special characters at the end of an entry name.

Update: it turns out that using creative manual URL editing, they can be deleted. Just add %3F to the end of the name part and replace the "edit" with "delete".

Update to losing the "backlinks" page: as I learned from the Netcipia tutorials, I was able to use "preferences" -> "skins" to recover the built-in backlinks panel. I like that method better than the "drag-and-drop" method anyway (being a vi kinda guy).

Minor issue - when you look at the "last modified" line at the bottom, it has the date of the last comment but the "modify by" name is the page owner, not the last comment author. (For example, see the bottom of this page.) It does the same thing with the page history also. I assume this is an xwiki issue, not a Netcipia issue.

Less minor issue - I've sent two communications to Netcipia about three weeks ago. One was a request to be a member of this "participation" space and the other was an e-mail asking about archiving/backing up. No response. This leads me to suspect that Netcipia might be a nice "playground" but isn't a hosting service that we can rely on. Pity. I would be willing to make significant donations regularly if I thought I could count on the place.

Hi Steve, thanks for all your feedbacks, but relating the emails you sent on june 9, Mike answered you on June 10, I have checked! So there must be a problem of communication. Please check your anti-spam filter, perhaps his messages are still there...

About your backup question, Mike answered the following:

Currently there is no backup available for users, but we are close to release a export feature to allow our users to backup by themselves their content. And it will be free :-)

And about the wrong price you mentioned, Mike answered you the following:

Thank you :-) we have corrected it

Don't worry about our hosting service, we are delivering it since august 2006, and in the past we delivered this kind of service for more than 6 years. So we'll do the same for Netcipia :-) We have still some occasional problems during this beta period, but a lot of professionals are using our services on a daily basis. During the summer, we'll continue to improve services and our reliability.

Thank you for your confidence :-)

HAHAHA!!! I owe you and Mike an apology. You did indeed get caught in my spam filter, but not where I expected. You ended up in the VIRUS section! Why? It's my own filter, and I've found a HUGE correlation with any message that is from "sford@geeky-boy.com". But yours was from mike@netsipia.com, why did it get flagged as a virus? Embedded in the e-mail was my original, which WAS listed as from sford@geeky-boy.com. My checker saw that second "from" address and flagged it.

Anyway, I totally withdraw my complaint. The xwiki system is still annoying at times, but Netcipia looks to be an excellent service.

P.S. - I updated http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Wiki_Science:How_to_start_a_Wiki with your new price.

When creating sub-sections (using 1.1, etc), the toc macro doesn't produce a usable table of contents - i.e. when you click the links it doesn't send you the appropriate sub-section. I assume this is a problem in xwiki, not netcipia.

WYSIWYG editor makes some unintended changes. Switching between Wiki editor and WYSIWYG often results in: a) weird line breaks b) loss of special characters c) weird additional backslash characters d) odd formatting of tables

2 more bugs: 1) Members Panel: The 'Invite New Member' link on the Members panel links to Wikiliki instead of Netcipia.

2) You don't seem to be able to re-invite a member (say they accidentally deleted an email) which means you have to delete them and then re-send the invitation.

And another one, sorry!

If you put a link to a web page with spaces in the name e.g. http://ocha.unog.ch/humanitarianreform/Portals/1/cluster%20approach%20page/Introduction/IASCGUIDANCENOTECLUSTERAPPROACH.pdf the WYSIWYG editor replaces the /%20 character with a space and then decides that the weblink address finishes at the first space. This is causing me real problems when I'm trying to put in footnotes.

Members panel invitation link is fixed. You cannot reinvite a member, but if he has deleted his email, you can now notify him directly to send him the information you want. And if he has lost his password, he goes to the log-in screen and clik on "forget your password" link to have a new one generated. But it could be a good idea to be able to renotify a member directly from the members list :-)

Ongoing problem with editing pages. Even if set for opening in WYSIWYG, sometimes the page randomly opens in the Wiki editor. When changing back to WYSIWYG the following problems occur:

a) Random backslashes at the end of a title b) random line breaks c) sometimes text even disappears d) bullets sometimes turn into bold text

It would be great if the page would look the same no matter what editor it has been edited in.

When you set the edition mode as "WYSIWYG" the page is still opened in "WIKI" edition mode if some special caracters are detected within content, such as HTML code (it's a kind of "advanced mode"). If you notice this "switch" in another context, that's not good and we do have to solve it, so please let it me know.

About problem when switching from one mode to another, we are working hard on this. Having a reliable editor is one of our main concern.

When clicking on 'print' I would like to be able to print the comments on a page. Is this possible.

I would also like to collate all comments made into one page so I can get an overview of what people are saying about different chapters of a book. Is this possible?

More WYSIWYG problems. Random deletion of text inserted as numbered list (I spent nearly 20 minutes trying to get 6 numbered paragraphs to show up.

Also, inserting footnote at end of a bullet-listed line means footnote shows up on next paragraph.

Hi Netcipia (even if based on XWiki) is not supporting yet the rename feature. You should ask your question on the xwiki users mailing list:

users mailing list: users@xwiki.org

The fact that Netcipia interprets two hyphens (--) as code for strikethrough creates a problem because two hyphens is the standard representation of the an em-dash (and typing two hyphens automatically creates an em-dash in Word), the kind that sets off parenthetical information within sentences. I use this punctuation a lot. I found that I can prevent this from being interpreted as code for strikethrough by using { pre } { /pre } but that is an annoying extra step.
